Depending on where you look for statistics, the number can be as high as 50% which rises dramatically in years 2 and 3, with up to 80% failing within the first five years of starting a business. Failure is such a harsh word. It makes it sound as if the years spent in the business were a waste, whereas in fact many business owners say that failing at one business taught them valuable lessons they needed to make their next business a success. What if you could learn from other people and get the benefit of their experience so that you could make your business a success the first time round – well this is what we hope to achieve from our next Lunch ‘n Learn which is especially for startups.

How To Survive The First Two Years In Business the topic for the third in a series of live chats we are hosting on our Facebook page. These live chats are called ‘Lunch ‘n Learn’ as they are held from 12.30 to 2.30pm so you can pop over to our Facebook wall during your lunch break. Stephen DillonStephen Dillon is Managing Director of The Corkage Group & Founder of Stephen holds a BBS in Business Studies from Dublin City University and a WSET Diploma in Wines & Spirits. He previously worked with Bord Bia in Paris, Dunnes Stores & Aldi Stores Ireland. In 2007 Stephen left his well-paid job to open an Internet Café in Blanchardstown, initially the business did well but advances in technology and increased competition ultimately forced the business to close. After this Stephen opened an Off Licence in Dublin, again the business traded well but the partnership structure of the business led to its collapse. Stephen founded in 2008 based largely on his experience of a lack of relevant and ‘real Life’ information available to Startup companies in Ireland. has grown to be an independent voice promoting entrepreneurship in Ireland.

Terrence BowdenTerence Bowden holds a Higher Degree in Product, Graphic and Interactive design where he was awarded a 1:1 from the University of Ulster.  More recently he has completed a Master Degree in Business Management where the major project he was involved in was awarded “Best Business Plan 2010” by Dublin City University. Terence has valuable experience in product/industrial design; during his 2 years with Hood Associates he designed several products for both large global corporations and local companies.  With James Leckey Design in Belfast he designed equipment for kids with special needs and was involved with the moving of manufacturing from Belfast to China.   More recently with LED Group, Terence spent two years as New Product Development Manager and Lighting Design Consultant, the company also recorded its highest ever profits from new products during this time. He has also designed lighting layouts for national and international retail outlets.  Presently he is the Venture Manager for the DCU Ryan Academy Propeller Venture accelerator.
